Radishes:)

This week's Box

Cauliflower
Broccoli
Lettuce
Radishes
Less Kohlrabi

I know we are all chomping at the bit for the summer crops. As am I. I love cucumbers. They are just around the corner. They are growing nicely. Cucumbers are about one inch long. I will be posting images on twitter & face-book within 24hrs. Tomatoes have fruit on them which is great. They are tiny and all over. This is good. Also the peppers are developing nicely as well. Today we flamed & mowed between the row's. This is a weekly task. Quite a daunting process. We first mow between the row's then I follow behind with a torch. Very Effective but daunting none the less. Worth not spraying!! The toads seem to be continuing to pour out of the pond because I continue to seem them all over. It is kinda funny. I even found one hopping in the store today. Ben checked on the new potatoes as well today they are getting close. We ran the irrigation today for the first time and gave our lettuce and peppers a little drink. We like to give the plants an environment that encourages growth. Still have not had to run the kelp yet but we will be giving them a kelp feeding soon.

Hope everyone enjoys this wonderful week of Sunshine & gets to spend some time outdoors.

Kohlrabi!

C.S.A. members,

This will be very plentiful in our first box. Thanks to the weather this spring we have an abundance of Kohlrabi. Don't be surprised if there is a few in your box. So we all need to find ways to cook them. We will find ways to utilize the whole plant. I will tell you how I cook them and consume them. They can be eaten raw. Cut the leaves off and wash thoroughly in cold water. Slice Kohlrabi and add spice of your choice. A little salt and pepper works; I like to eat them raw. They can also be sliced and added to a salad. A great compliment to any type of salad. They can be cooked on the grill in aluminum foil. Cut the leaves off. Place Kohlrabi in foil add spices, olive oil or butter. Place on grill that is turned on low. Cover the top with foil as well. Let simmer for 20-25 minutes. When they have the consistency of a potato they are done. They can also be steamed on stove in pan with a little bit of water, and lid.

Hope This Help's

Update On The Farm!!

We opened up for business on Sunday and that went great.  We are now open Tues-Sun. Closed Monday.  Right now you can buy local honey and our jams. PLEASE DO. It helps us when we have no produce to sell. Now to the good stuff. The weather, has cleared finally and we have been extremely busy. All the potatoes, onions, kohlrabi, and cabbage are in the ground growing— ooh yeah Brussels. We are busy planting all day and will be for the next few days. We have at least three acres of produce growing already.  It is pretty intense this time of year, and I love it. Watching life happen before your eyes is amazing, I can't even describe the feeling it is so rewarding.
We planted all of the cold crops on the back side of the farm, opposite from last year. So far, planting has been a success with no major hick-ups. Our potato planter did not arrive in time this year, so I had the honor of planting potatoes & onions through my neighbor's modified 1900's planter. Modified, of course, to be pulled by a tractor not a horse. I have pictures that will come soon.  I started all of the cabbage inside my house in February, with shop-lights.  Later I moved the plants to the green house.  The plants turned out beautifully.
