Recipe:Grilled Bak Choi

Grilled Bok Choy Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 (2 pound) head of bok choy
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt (such as LAWRY'S®)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat, and lightly oil the grate.
  2. In a bowl, mix butter, garlic powder, paprika, and 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper. Slice the bottom off the head of bok choy, and remove and clean the stalks. Sprinkle seasoned salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper over both sides of the stalks.
  3. Lay the bok choy stalks on the preheated grill. Brush with seasoned butter mixture, cover the grill, and cook until the bok choy stalks show grill marks and the leaves are crisp at the edges, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the bok choy, brush with butter mixture, cover, and grill the other sides. Brush with any remaining butter mixture, and remove to a platter to serve.

  • Cook's Note
  • You can easily do this recipe inside by using a large skillet and cooking a few stalks at a time. The leaves won't get crispy like they do on the grill, but the taste is still delicious!

What is Bak Choi?

Bak Choi/Pak Choi is a vegetable that we grow on the farm and will be distributing to our C.S.A. members. It is a highly nutritious vegetable! If you like celery you will love this veggie. Even though it looks like celery it is in the cabbage family. It has thick white stalks and huge green leaves. Traditionally this vegetable has been cultivated in China for centuries. It has gained popularity because of it's many uses and nutritional value. A Half cup of Bak Choi contains roughly ten calories! Many people also use the leaves in Salads!

Farm Update: C.S.A. Members!

I'm Back,

Sweet 99% of planting is done. I can breath now. Everything is going great and I have great news. We are officially starting the season on June 7th & 8th for pick up & home deliveries. Rockwell drop-off will start the following Tuesday which I believe is the 12th. This will be the first week of distribution. This is one week sooner then last year. This is due to the continued unseasonably warm weather. If you are wondering if the irrigation has been going to good use, it has been! All of the vegetable beds are growing quite nicely. This has been a great year to have vegetables grown in raised beds because of their ability to hold moisture in.

Week 1:

Bak Choi (This looks Amazing!)
Heirloom Lettuce
Onions
Kohlrabi
Herb's
Spinach

I will post more as things grow to update the list. We might have new potato's just depends on how much moisture we get. It might be the second week before we start harvesting potatoes. So stay posted on week 1 items because their could be others. Now that we are beginning I will start posting recipes on my blog that correspond with the items in your box. This will help you optimize your experience with our C.S.A. So check blog for recipes. Also the Glads I planted have already sprouted their shoots! We have not put the iris bulbs in yet but we are going to soon. Hope everyone is as excited as I am.

Farm Update: C.S.A. Members

Hello,

Summer plants are almost totally in the ground. Today we planted 4000+ plants! Loads of peppers. Our 2nd grouping of kale and Our second grouping of Kohlrabi and third and fourth group of lettuce's. The farm has so much life on it right now. Everything is growing excellent. Sunday I hooked up the irrigation and watered. It has been a little dry. This is a great feature that we have on the farm because we are able to water if it decides not to rain. So we could have lots of veggies in a dry condition. Also our first batch of spring greens are growing like crazy. They are huge! Check out the photo's on face-book. I cultivated the potato plants again today. The potato plants are doing excellent and so far I have not seen to many beetles on them. I can't wait to try out the "new" digger the farm has purchased. It should make digging them a breeze. I also want to thank all of the members that were able to come to the orientation. I hope you all had a good time.

Farm Update: C.S.A. Members!

Life on the farm is still busy but the end of planting season is near. We are just waiting for our secret date when we put in our warm season crops. (May 22) Everything is growing excellent. I pulled some of the potatoes out of the ground and they are covered in roots. This is a great sign. Also when I was in the potato patch I noticed that many of the plants have emerged out of the ground. It is sweet to see them peek out of the ground. It gives me confidence to say that potato's should be in abundance again this year. Also today we covered all of the lettuce with a special fabric. So if you drive by and see something on the lettuce, that is what it is. This cloth allows us to grow lettuce well into summer. Much longer then if it was uncovered. It also keeps the lettuce extremely clean. If you can't make it to the orientation try to stop out sometime before or soon after if you get a chance so we can show you the farm. When I was driving the tractor by the farm today I noticed a lot of frogs in the pond. This leads me to believe that mating season is just around the corner for these little guys, so stay posted. I will let you know when they hatch, because when they do we have possibly over a million of these little creatures leaping everywhere. The kids will love to come out to the farm and catch them! They also do a number on our insects. They thrive on the farm because they can seek shelter under the plastic. I also think they thrive because our pond is not filled up with roundup. Well it is official the meat has been a hot seller. I have received more for this weekend as well as eggs. We are only getting twenty dozen a week right now so make sure you stop out if you need some. The Tomato's, peppers, and eggplant our in the greenhouse still and they are in excellent health as well as our other plugs of veggies yet to be put in.

All for now
